Bulger’s Girlfriend Faces Sentencing Tuesday
By Stephanie Burke
Catherine Greig will face a federal court Judge in Boston tomorrow. Greig will find out her fate for helping one of the most notorious criminals in history elude capture for 16 years. Greig was the long time companion of mob boss James “Whitey” Bulger.
Bulger and Greig were on the run since 1995 until they were captured in 2011 in Santa Monica, CA. Bulger is accused of killing dozens of people while he “ruled” the streets of Boston.
Greig is facing up to 15 years in prison. Five years on each of three charges: conspiracy to harbor a fugitive, identity fraud and conspiracy to commit identity fraud. Greig’s laywer, Kevin Reddington is asking for a 27 to 33 month sentence. Prosecutors are seeking Greig get 10 years in prison.
Back in March Greig agreed to a plea deal with prosecutors. The deal does not include an agreement for Greig to cooperate against Bulger. However the plea deal does not preclude them from trying to compel her to testify against him. Also,in her plea agreement, Greig admitted that she used aliases, unlawfully obtained identification documents and repeatedly helped Bulger get prescription medication from a pharmacy.
The judge presiding over the sentencing, U.S. District Judge Douglas Woodlock, has not yet said whether he will allow relatives of Bulger’s victims to give victim impact statements at Greig’s hearing.
