Do you ever watch that show “What Would You Do” with John Stossell?

Here’s one for you. If you were at your child’s little league game and someone called a coach or player a F%!&!^g N!%%@*, would you say something about it to the other parent or an umpire? What would you do if it was a coach’s wife? What would you do if the umpire knew, but chose not to do anything? Would you talk to the president of the league? And if the president told you they did not want to rock the boat or do anything about it, would you pull your child from the league?

This is precisely what happened recently during a string of little league games in East Cambridge, but the league in question refuses to take action. In a city as diverse as Cambridge is, and in a league where probably 70% are not white, coaches and kids have been victims of racist remarks and discrimination on the field.

Part of the problem is that there are no real rules, just a code of conduct for players and parents to follow. There’s a league president, but no board of directors. This means that when the president doesn’t do anything when coaches and kids are called N!&&@%$ and discriminated against, victims have no recourse. Many parents fear coming forward because they worry about retaliation and sabotaging their kid’s baseball career.

Little league is supposes to be about baseball and having fun.
