Rajan Rondo “Bumps” his way out of Game 2
By Stephanie Burke
Last night the Celtics played Game 1 vs the Atlanta Hawks. Throughout the game they trailed Atlanta and found themselves trying to pull out of a 17 point deficient. It looked as though they might achieve this comeback and then Rondo lost his mind with 40 seconds left in the fourth. Obviously not literally but one would have to question Rondo’s state of sanity to not only yell at a ref but physically touch the ref by chest bumping him in a playoff game! As you can imagine this caused Rondo to be ejected from the game and probably suspended from Game 2!
The incident played out like this: Kevin Garnett knocked the ball away from Joe Johnson. This caused a skirmish on the floor and a foul was called on Brandon Bass for fouling Josh Smith. This bad call by the ref caused Rondo to flip out and yell in the face of official Marc Davis, who gave him technical foul. Rondo kept walking towards Davis yelling about the call and “bumped him in the back with his chest. That action got Rondo a second technical foul and automatic ejection from the game. This also opens up the possibility for a suspension from game 2 for physical contact with an official.
The Celtics are already down one of their stars with Ray Allen’s bone spurs leaving his status up in the air. Now with Rondo possibly missing Game 2 as well; it is definitely not a good way to start a 7 game series. Celtics coach Doc Rivers is of course trying to save Rondo from suspension by saying Rondo tripped and accidentally bumped the official. Now I have always been a fan of Rondo but pissed or not he had to know his little fit would cause repercussions. Especially when he took it one step to far and physically touched the referee. By now saying “oh he tripped” I almost feel like they are insulting our intelligence. I mean come on Doc, look at the tape and then try to say that with a straight face.
Take a look at the video below and let us know what you think…accidental bump or temper fit?
By the way the Celtics lost last night 83-74. Game 2 is tomorrow night in Atlanta.
