14 Dead & 50 injured in Shooting at Colorado Theatre
By Stephanie Burke
In Aurora, Colorado at least 14 people were killed and 50 were wounded when a gunman opened fire at a midnight showing of The Dark Knight. The suspect was taken into custody after being found in the trunk of the car. The man was heavily armed and wearing a bulletproof vest. The identity of the suspect is not known at this time but his vehicle did have a Tennessee license plate.
It is reported that the gunmen used some sort of “smoke device” before opening fire on the theatre. Apparently the gun shots created confusion amongst the movie goers as many thought it was part of the movie as it occurred during a shoot out scene. Witnesses stated that the gunman gained access to the theatre by kicking in the emergency exit.
President Obama was alerted to the shooting just before 5:30 a.m. He said, “Michelle and I are shocked and saddened.”
Maybe it is strange but every time I hear about something like this happening my thoughts immediately go to 9/11. I remember thinking on that day “the world has gone crazy.” Actually I believe I said that exact statement to my mother as we watched a plane crash into the towers. Now I realize that many will say Columbine is what they think about but for me it is 9/11. Yes there has always been evil in this world but 9/11 brought it to us front and center. In those moments as we all watched in horror we, as a nation, were changed forever. You could actually feel the change. I can’t describe it but I’m sure you know what I mean. So for me when something like this happens I’m brought right back to that place, “the world has gone crazy”. I mean what kind of world do we live in were people have to be scared to go to the movies?
Now I know there will be people who blame the movies but I have never been one to take that as a legitimate argument. I mean at a certain age no matter the movies you watch, the video games you played, or your childhood, you know right from wrong. Personal responsibility has to come into play at some point.
It saddens me to think that the children of this nation will grow up having things like this happen all to often. I remember a time when people could leave their doors unlocked, kids could play outside until the street lights came on, and people genuinely cared about each other. Lets hope as a nation we can all get back there someday.
